Primary Agency for Iron & Steel Data Collection
Constituted in 1964 by the Ministry of Steel, the Joint Plant Committee (JPC) was established
to formulate guidelines for the production, allocation, pricing, and distribution of iron and steel materials
in the country.
Following the de-regulation of the Indian steel industry in 1992, JPC underwent a major transformation
-
evolving from a regulatory body into a facilitator and knowledge center for the Indian steel sector. Since
then, JPC has been dedicated to developing and maintaining a comprehensive, credible, and non-partisan
databank on the Indian iron and steel industry-the first of its kind in the nation.
Today, JPC stands as the only institution officially empowered by the Ministry of Steel, Government
of
India, to collect, compile, and disseminate authentic data on the Indian iron and steel industry.
The data and
analys’s provided by JPC serve as vital inputs for policy formulation, research, and strategic planning by the
Government and industry stakeholders.
In recognition of its commitment to quality and reliability, JPC has been accredited with ISO
9001:2015
certification. Upholding its mandate, JPC continues to play a pivotal role in promoting transparency, informed
decision-making, and sustainable growth within the Indian steel sector.
As per Notification No. S.0. 1868(E) issued on 25 April 2025, under the Collection of Statistics (CoS)
Act, 2008, the JPC serves as the Primary Agency for iron and steel data collection.
Under the provisions of the said CoS Act, 2008 the following officers have been designated.
The Joint Plant Committee (JPC), under the Ministry of Steel, is mandated as a primary agency to collect,
maintain, and add under the CoS ACT 2008 disseminate comprehensive, accurate, and timely data on the Indian
iron
and steel industry, its mission is to support evidence-based policy formulation and promote sustainable
development of the sector through systematic data management, analysis, and research
In fulfilment of this mission, JPC shall:
Through these activities, JPC seeks to reinforce its role as the trusted data and knowledge partner of the Ministry of Steel, contributing to informed policymaking, industry competitiveness, and long term sectoral development and sustainability.
